Level generation is much more complex in JH than it was in DRL, both on the generator level and with level branches. For example - while master traits are still missing (and should appear in the game within the next 2 months), the majority of basic and advanced traits are things that change your gameplay instead of just giving +2 to some invisible stat. We've substituted the former with an explicit cover system and hunker mechanics, and the latter is substituted with smarter AI and new traits.Īt the current moment, JH still lacks a couple systems that DRL had, yet I'd argue that the depth of the counterpart systems in place is often greater. Neither of those would be considered fun unless you really knew the game well and treated it as a abstract puzzle, and were willing to "grind" it step by step. The first was a "mechanic" that was hard to communicate to the player, and by its roots was pretty buggy in itself, and the latter resulted in optimal gameplay that required you to shoot a shotgun blindly every step and listen to enemies, then shooting beyond vision sight.

The two major DRL strategies for high level play (it's "depth" if you may) revolved around abusing a imperfect line of sight algorithm (cornershooting) and dumb AI and overpowered shotguns (radar shooting). I noticed that many people regard DRL through rose tinted glasses. Hey, thanks for backing our Kickstarter! I wanted to put a few comments here, as there's a bit of sentiment that is (what I hope) slowly becoming invalid, and a bit of misconception on where we're heading with JH now! Sometimes you want that 30 min-an hour experience with non stop action and this game delivers that in spades. I'm not always in the mood for a 5-10 hour run in DCSS (I'm a slow player). I use the game as something to play between the bigger RLs. You are not going to get the timesink you get out of something like Nethack or DCSS. Again this is more of a short RL experience. Now the OP says he wants to sink a lot of hours in the game.

And DoomRL is still there to play for free for those who prefer it. Most of the options that have been "taken away" from DoomRL were either boring or flat out bugs. I think it is well worth playing now and getting better all the time. The game has already developed a lot since release.

I see complaints about the kind of over the top speech in the game but you have the options to turn it off or even adjust the profanity in it if you don't want that. But if you want that 30 races/professions sort of game this is not that sort of experience. There are 3 classes at the moment and a number of fun ways to play. The fun comes from doing the different challenges. You'll spend 30 minutes to an hour on an average run. This is a coffee break RL like it's predecessor DoomRL.
